Kempegowda International Airport, Bangalore
About Kempegowda International Airport, Bangalore
Kempegowda International Airport, Bangalore (IATA: BLR, ICAO: VOBL), also known as Bangalore Airport, is an international airport serving Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, India. It is the third-busiest airport in India by passenger traffic, air traffic movements, and domestic and total cargo handled, behind the airports in Delhi and Mumbai. The airport is a hub for AirAsia India, Alliance Air, IndiGo, Star Air, and a focus city for Air India, Vistara, and SpiceJet.
The airport is located in Devanahalli, about 30 kilometers (19 mi) north of the city center. It is spread over an area of 4,000 acres (1,600 ha) and has two terminals: Terminal 1 for domestic flights and Terminal 2 for international flights. The two terminals are connected by a free shuttle bus service.
The airport offers connecting flights to all six inhabited continents, and direct flights to five of them. It is also a major cargo hub, handling over 400,000 tonnes of cargo annually.
History:
The airport was inaugurated on 24 May 2008 by the then Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh. It was built to replace HAL Airport, the original primary commercial airport serving Bangalore, which had become congested and was unable to meet the growing demand for air travel.
The airport was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), a leading American architecture firm. The design of the airport is inspired by the traditional architecture of Karnataka, with elements such as the lotus flower and the Hoysala style of architecture.
The airport is owned and operated by Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), a public–private consortium. The consortium includes the Government of Karnataka, Airports Authority of India, Siemens Project Ventures, and Larsen & Toubro.
